May 2011 - Picture of the Month
May 2011 - Executive Office of Ken Woodward
Dear family,
Recently, in the comic strip “Zits” the parents were reminiscing about raising their son Jeremy and one said to the other, “the days have been long, but the years have been short.” I feel the same about this Newswire, the days of each month are slow, but the end of each month comes around extremely often.
Last month as I took Zack and Josh to Rio Americano high school to register for the upcoming school year I recalled some of the words of a song, made popular by Frank Sinatra before any of you were born, “Seems to me I’ve heard that song before, it’s from an old familiar score, I know it well, that melody”
This was the fourth time I’ve been through this Rio Americano melody. My overall impression was the buildings are the same, only the faces have change. Probably the most important part of the evening’s activity was showing Zack and Josh the spot in the school parking lot where Kevin checked in each school morning with CHP officer Al Parker as a condition for maintaining his driver’s license. Kevin was considered by Officer Parker as being on informal probation. If I’d had my way it would have been more than “informal.” I think Kevin still holds the record on Highway 160 for speeding and being able to talk the arresting officer out of a ticket..Until then I didn’t know that Cutlass could do over 100.
I’m pleased to report that my tomatoes are doing well, even the one in the Topsy Turvey upside down planter, courtesy of Torrie and Levi. I haven’t read all the directions carefully yet, but Levi, if I grow tomatoes upside down, do I have to stand on my head when I eat them?
Again, it’s been a slow month.

May 2011 - Haupt, Levi & Torrie & Family
April is a big month in the Haupt household. This April was no different. We loved listening as a family to General Conference, and the girls were pretty good at being quiet and coloring while we listened. I am personally so grateful for the instruction given, and love the stories. Even though she doesn’t get everything, Emma was picking up on key words from her bingo card, I think the bingo cards was a fabulous idea, whoever came up with that, is a genius!
Also the wedding cake was a HUGE HIT!!!!
Easter as well came and this was the first year that Emma sort of understood what was happening, and she was super sweet in sharing the egg hunt with Charlotte. We also visited on Easter Saturday the nearby tulip fields which have now become a Family tradition. Its already gorgeous up here between the water in the Sound and the two ranges of huge mountains and the green of the evergreens, but then to add fields of colors from thousands (probably a couple million) tulips…. I don’t know why the rest of you aren’t on our doorstep yet!
Directly following Easter Sunday, was Emma’s 5th Birthday. She has been excited about this since November 30th. Since the child has hair down to her hinny we were obliged to have a “Tangled” party. More changes for us in the fact that we are in the process of purchasing a house! That’s right, we’re all grown up. We are very lucky to stay in the same school district and even the same ward, very VERY blessed and very VERY excited, we close mid May and we’ll be fully in if all goes as planned by Memorial weekend.
I am sure we’ll have more to share about the house in June.

Is it May already?
After reading about all the talent in the family (ranging from exquisite cake decorating to masterful illustration) Aunt Susan tried her hand at cookie design. The Stake Baptism Fireside was scheduled for the middle of April and the children turning eight in the next few months were invited to get a preview of what Baptism looks, feels, and tastes like. After several failed batches of cookies in the shape of an eight, Aunt Susan hit upon a terrific solution to the problem of a creative and tasty refreshment for the Fireside. She went to her local bakery and ordered them. Problem solved! There is something to be said for the talent of 'problem solving' wouldn't you agree?
Enjoy all the May flowers. April surely did its thing by 'showering' profusely throughout the month.

May 2011 - Slade, Jeff & Crystal & Family
Well, lets see....Our "baby" turned 6 this month. We had a Power Ranger birthday party with friends from school. It is interesting to note that about 8 years ago we had a Power Ranger themed birthday party for our oldest son Mathew.....Will those guys ever go away?
Our school year is winding down. I currently work part time in 2 different districts. In Windsor (where we live and my kids go to school) we have about 3 weeks left, in Poudre ( where I am now working because they needed me to fill in for someone who resigned mid-year, where I used to work(2005-2007) and where I will probably work next year instead of Windsor) I have about 4 weeks left. Regardless, we are almost done and looking forward to a fun summer of day trips.....

Jeff has decided that his calling in life is to teach and is contemplating going back to Wal-mart on a short term basis while he is dong what is necessary to get there. We will keep you updated. As you know at the last General Conference they announced a temple in Ft. Collins....which is only 20 minutes from us. We are so excited that there was a slight reverence lapse in our home when that announcement was made. Yeah.

May 2011 - Westover, Mel & Carol
Well family, the last few months has gone by very fast. The month of February and March were marked by illness. (sinus infection that would not go away) Luckily, two different antibiotics saved the day. At school we have taken the preparatory tests for the STAR test. This last month the students took the ELA portion of the STAR test. The students will finish the Math portion of the STAR on May 3. The whole year is winding down and it is all about how well the students have done on the STAR test. I am very proud of how hard they have worked all year long.
Our spring break was great! We got to use Mel's truck and go buy some plants for Adam and Erica's yard. The very best part was that Maja and Annika got to ride in the truck with their dad. (Cannons, remember when you got to ride in papa's truck?) I also did a lot of cleaning and organizing. I always think better when my home is clean and organized.

Dear Family:
In the second Book of Nephi, chapter 9 verse 42, the prophet Jacob teaches the ancient Nephites that they must beware of being puffed up because of wisdom. This past month, Arianna received similar advice from Dr. Noble who extracted all four of her third molars. Aside from a little diazepam for relaxation and some novocaine placed in the area of interest, Arianna unflinchingly subjected herself to one of the most dreaded procedures performed on young adults between the ages of 17 and 25. And within a few days, she was back to her systematic daily activities, with hardly any swelling whatsoever.
We all enjoyed watching the BYU graduation exercises for Ryan and Alexis. Elder Richard G. Scott provided a masterful address as he presided over the commencement. Ryan and Alexis were each recognized in their respective school convocations. Maija and Averie were there to witness every step, and they both did extremely well over the two days. We had the chance to reunite with all of the Woodward family members living in the counties of Utah and Salt Lake. Kristy hospitably introduced some of us to the comfortable warm water at Saratoga Springs. We even worked in a Saturday soiree at Chuck-a-Rama, which was a hit with all of the cousins. We are very proud of Ryan and Alexis for their tireless efforts, in supporting one another, to achieve this remarkable milestone.
It's our hope that everyone enjoyed a marvelous Easter Sunday.

April 2011 - Picture of the Month

Dear family,
Except for Levi’s usual poor showing in the NCAA brackets and the passing of Kristy and Carol’s peer, Danny Connor, not necessary exclusive, news from the home front this past month worthy of reporting in the Newswire has been very sparse. Hopefully better days are ahead.
However I feel compelled to reveal to you through this medium an important item of history which otherwise may be lost should at some time in the future I become infirm, or worse.
I have felt this necessary because in a recent exchange of correspondence with one of the more accomplished members of our extended family I made reference to the City of Franklin Chief of Police. Perhaps that was not wise. Without knowing the background she probably wondered how a community with a one-man part-time police department could justify such a position.
My great grandfather, Preston Thomas, was the first bishop of Franklin. In addition to his ecclesiastical responsibilities he assumed the burden of maintaining civil order. In the latter he was not well suited, sometimes imposing punishment overly excessive, such as requiring the miscreant to sit on the front row in sacrament meeting.
One day J.J. Hill, a community recognized scholar and one who claimed to have actually read the U. S. Constitution advised the bishop that there may be read in the 1st Amendment a provision, although vague, that would allow him to defer to civil authority the enforcement of non-church violations. Later this was recognized nation-wide as "separation of church and state."
So the Village Board established a position of part-time policeman. T.C.H. Howell (TC), the cemetery sexton (gravedigger), was chosen from a long list of candidates to fill the position, with the understanding that he would continue with the sexton responsibility. TC promised an approach to administering local justice not possible by the others vying for the position. With his unlimited access to the graveyard he was uniquely qualified, he put new meaning to the expression, “dead or alive.”
As an aside, but worthy of mention, TC claimed that earlier in his life he was a dentist, and he may have been; he only had three fingers on his right hand.
After a few years TC asked the Board for a merit raise. He claimed that during his tenure Franklin had been crime free. That was not surprising, any action unbecoming that of a model citizen was against the law. Being unable to present sufficient evidence that his performance was beyond that normally expected, his request was denied. But to give recognition for his stellar service, TC was promoted to the position of Chief of Police. It was a brilliant move, he could then served in a dual capacity in law enforcement, chief and staff to the chief. That arrangement has carried over to this day.
This is important that you learn this from me as you may not find it recorded in any history book,

April 2011 - Bessey, Ryan & Alexis & Family
Greetings Family
Our little family would like to announce that we are finally graduating this month from BYU. It's been a long and grueling process and we have many wonderful supporters to thank for without them we wouldn't have been able to finish, especially my little girls who have put up with being dragged around to classes and working so well with me and my crazy schedule. I am so grateful for the opportunity I have had to finish my education (even though it was very difficult, I'm pretty sure it was the last couple years of classes that meant the most and were the most valuable to me. That seems to be how it is supposed to go.) So again, we would like to thank you for your love and support. We will be walking at graduation on April 21st, ceremony starts at 11 in the good old Marriott Center. Then we have the convocations the following day at 11 in the Smith Field house and 2 in the De Jong for Ryan and myself respectively. Ryan will graduate with a major in Civil Engineering (he would be a terrific asset to the industry, he's one of the smartest guys I know) and a minor in math. He however is not done with school as he was recently accepted into BYU's graduate program and will continue to get his Masters...so we will be here a bit longer. I will graduate with a major in Visual Arts emphasis in Illustration and minor in English (I will be a terrific asset to my husband's business letters.) And I am OFFICIALLY DONE WITH SCHOOL!!!! YAY! Not through with learning of course, that will take probably three more years. For those of you in Utah who would like/or able to attend we welcome you and appreciate your support. We love you and we are happy to join our BYU Alumni family...except for Grandma of course, I heard she was a traitor and went to the U...good thing Grandpa overlooked that detail.

April 2011 - Haupt, Levi & Torrie & Family
March was a looong month in the Haupt household. Levi had to put in some very long hours, like 80 in one week. I spent my time trying to figure out how to bake and assemble my first wedding cake. I am waiting on my van title to be released from some po-dunk bank in Saratoga Springs, NY so that I can register my car. Said bank has no updated technology so changing my address has been a hassle. We also had to wait to see who won our March Madness challenge, although that wait was shorter than normal considering, our brackets were done before the “elite 8’ round, Emma won.
April is a month long anticipated in our house as its Emma’s birthday, yet another reason why March seemed so long, it felt like we were watching a pot of water trying to boil.
Oh now I remember why March was forgettable this year, because we spent the majority of it being sick! All of us got sick this month and it lingered longer than necessary. But we’re finally done thank goodness!
Now some highlights. Our church building was burnt down last October and on March 19th there was a groundbreaking ceremony held and they are trying to finish the rebuild before Christmas this year, YAY! When they finish it will be walking distance from us, such a blessing.

Oh now I remember why March was forgettable this year, because we spent the majority of it being sick! All of us got sick this month and it lingered longer than necessary. But we’re finally done thank goodness!
Now some highlights. Our church building was burnt down last October and on March 19th there was a groundbreaking ceremony held and they are trying to finish the rebuild before Christmas this year, YAY! When they finish it will be walking distance from us, such a blessing.
We’re looking forward to spring and getting Emma registered for KINDERGARTEN for this coming fall.

March is March. Basketball games, fussy weather, daylight savings time, and, as you know, the month in which Uranus was discovered 230 years ago, in 1781. Considering how may jokes have developed over the years about the planet I think King George III of England turns over in his grave every time the anniversary rolls around.
March started out with some serious business. I had occasion to sit for two hours in the waiting room of the courthouse while waiting for my turn at the teller window. Isn't the term "Teller" rather out of place in a house of law? It connotes one who is a cashier. Ah! I'm wrong, it does apply. In most houses of law the sound of money is louder than the sound of justice.
On another note, it was fun to return to Beehives this month. I had occasion to teach those darling girls about storytelling. Of course Grandpa should have been the one called upon but while preparing for the lesson it struck me that Grandpa came from a family tradition of storytelling. His 'tall tales' are actually a developed talent that have entertained and instructed us our entire lives. I have decided that Grandpa is not the hyperbolist, of which I have accused him, but a skilled color-commentator of life. I think BYU needed Grandpa's "commenting" skills after the Florida game. I'm sure the outcome of the game would have sounded much better coming from Grandpa than the national sports pundits and the gloaters in my office. (Sigh!)
As I read about and view your various accomplishments I feel blessed to be part of a family that just keeps on growing and glowing with talent!

April - 2011 Woodward, Kevin & Tammy & Family
It's always a mystery to me as to when the vernal equinox officially arrives. This year it was on March 20th at 11:21 PM. Other years it is on the 21st or the 22nd of March. All I know is that when it is Zach and Josh's birthday, we are about there.
We enjoyed our usual March Madness brought to us by Levi. But by the time we got to the elite eight, it was finale for everyone.
Tammy works diligently with her Valiant 10 class. They all love Sister Woodward. She sends out each week's lesson via e-mail on Sunday afternoon just as the kids arrive at home from church. She finds that the kids eagerly await her e-mail and faithfully read the lesson in preparation for their next class with her. Some of them write summaries of the scriptures they read and send them back to her on days they know they will not be in class. It's wonderful to see how well they respond to her loving guidance.
I was in Orlando on business during the week of Spring Break (March 21 - 25). I think that everyone residing east of I-5 was there as well. It was a busy place!
We are gearing up for Girls Camp scheduled for June, and for our quadrennial Trek in Wyoming scheduled for July 25 - 27. This year we plan to pull the handcarts 15 miles over Rocky Ridge and then another 10 miles, crossing the Sweetwater River and into Martin's Cove. Now is the time we begin the practice hiking in earnest. Just to the west of our home a few blocks is the Santa Fe trail. That's where Tammy and I will be doing our training. We'll have about 400 youth and adult leaders from the stake who will be participating. We've called brethren with military logistics training to enable us to get from point A to point B and back. I must say that they are very good at what they do

We enjoyed our usual March Madness brought to us by Levi. But by the time we got to the elite eight, it was finale for everyone.
Tammy works diligently with her Valiant 10 class. They all love Sister Woodward. She sends out each week's lesson via e-mail on Sunday afternoon just as the kids arrive at home from church. March 2011 - Executive Office of Ken Woodward
Dear family,
The Executive Office operated in a semi-vacation mode during February to celebrate the shorter month and to recognize the 279th birthday of George Washington, so we have little to report.
Two highlights are worth mentioning. The first, and extremely important, was the birth of Seth Daniel Wilcox, and the second, the surfacing of Aaron, the importance of which is in the eyes of the beholder.
Levi tells me he is gearing up for a successful family March Madness contest, and Tammy will be devoting full time studying the teams’ mascots to determine the strength of each of the 64-team entries. We have an exciting month ahead.
