January 2012 - Executive Office of Ken Woodward

Dear Family,

Facebook has a disturbing feature, absent in our Newswire. Aaron can now insult me more often than once a month. And with a new law in California requiring booster-seats for all children under 8, it would be well if Adam turned his family facebook activities over to Erica and he spent more time hassling violators instead of me.

As a sworn officer of the law, and a model citizen, I wonder if Adam ever issued himself a ticket. And if he did, did he pay the fine or try to get it fixed.

Christmas vacation for Joshua and Zachari was unique, much like Ground Hog Day. They came out of their bedroom only on Christmas morning, examined their gifts and returned to their hole until New Year’s eve.
They come out then only because their rich Fresno grandfather came to report to them of how much fun, food, and frivolity they missed by refusing his invitation to accompany he and Monica to Las Vegas for the holidays.

I was delighted with a visit from Susan, Emily and Justin on Christmas day.. We had an enjoyable time, but I was disappointed that my youngest grandson, Rocco, didn’t accompany them.. He sent his regrets. He was skiing In New Hampshire.

Overall, 2011 was a good year. We have experienced limited illness, the boys have missed no school so far this school year. The air is warm, the grass is brown, with December being the 4th driest December of record, and no storm in sight. A few of my close friends cashed in during the year, and Price Funeral Chapel mailed me a 2012 calendar with a reminder that they are still looking forward to my future business.

You’re a great family and I am proud of all of you.

Love, Dad

January 2012 - McClintock, Robert & Susan

Greetings Family,

This McClintock LOVES, LOVES, LOVES Christmas decorations and lights!! Not that the McClintock's house is an outstanding example of Christmas decor and design, but this McClintock appreciates a tasteful assembly of lights and reverence for the season. So, in keeping with said enthusiasm for exterior Christmas lights and decorations a quest was undertaken to find and document the City and State Christmas trees. Sadly, the City Christmas tree was adversely affected by an unseasonable gale that blew through town just a couple of days after cranes and elves hoisted the tree into place. The state Tree, however, must have been born under a special Star (no pun intended) because it did not suffer the same fate as the City tree. One night, early in December, with camera in hand, this McClintock went in search of the elusive government agency 'Christmas' trees. The attached pictures will prove that, yes Virginia there is STILL a Santa in government office.

Another Christmas thrill was having Emily and Justin spend Christmas in Carmichael. Emily came in a couple of days before Justin. What fun to have the house filled with activity and exuberance not initiated by an enema. There was the mandatory evening trek to view the Fabulous Forty Avenues' holiday decorations and to verify that the 'government' trees were will standing. Then Christmas day arrived and a 92 year old Grandma Anna was very eager to get to 'presents' long before the rest of the church-going family was able. (Some days can be tough on 92 year old grandmothers.)

Lastly, a mention of the neighbors whose holiday decoration enthusiasm is excessive yet effective in warding off potential thieves. The decorations are so extravagant as to attract Looky-loos to the street. Increased traffic results in increased Sheriff patrols. Increased Sheriff patrols scares off would-be holiday thieves. The 'Home Alone' sticky/wet Bandits will never have a chance as long as our neighbors LOVE decorating for Christmas.

Have a wonderful start to a new Year. Let's compare notes in 2013 about the Mayan's prediction. (Didn't they read the old testament? Guess not.)

Love, The McClintock

January 2012 - Woodward, Kevin & Tammy & Family

During the month of December, we had a couple of noteworthy events occur. Jane Baer, the Denver Colorado Temple matron (wife of temple president Mark Baer) was killed in an automobile accident on November 27. We attended her funeral service on December 3, which was presided over by Elder William R. Walker of the Seventy and who is the executive director of the Church's Temple Department. We love Sister Baer. She was a dear friend. It was always a pleasure to see her at the temple. We were privileged to have her and her husband in our home at the time that President Uchtdorf came to visit last year. We will certainly miss her.

On December 9 and 10, Elder Richard G. Scott was in town for the neighboring Colorado Springs Stake conference. A member of our stake had requested a blessing for their 11-year old daughter who is suffering from cancer. Elder Scott agreed to meet with the family, and requested that I and their bishop assist him in administering to her. It was a wonderful experience of instruction for each of us as he began by asking her if she had faith to be healed. He also reminded her that sometimes blessings as pronounced are realized, and sometimes they are not. It all depends upon the will of the Lord, but it is up to us to exercise our faith. Then he asked her if she would be willing to accept the will of the Lord. In the course of the blessing, he invoked the apostolic keys. The whole experience lasted all but about 20 minutes, yet it was one that each of us will remember.

With this being the end of the year, I'd like to share with you a Christmas message, one which I had the privilege of sharing with our stake during our Christmas program earlier in the month..

During the latter half of the twentieth century, the American public enjoyed a daily comic strip which was written and illustrated by Charles Schultz called Peanuts. In that strip there was a lovable character called Snoopy, the pet beagle of one Charlie Brown. In the late 1960s, Snoopy was often portrayed as imagining himself as a flying ace who would do battle with Manfred von Richthofen, also known as the Red Baron, a famed World War I German fighter pilot. As a result of the popularity of Snoopy’s regular encounters with the Red Baron, a song was produced, which was often played on the radio during the Christmas season, telling the story of a Christmas truce that was enjoyed between these two arch enemies..

Although Snoopy and his owner Charlie Brown were lovable, fictional characters, there was in December 1943, a 2nd Lt. Charles L. Brown who was flying his first bombing mission as pilot-commander of a B-17 Flying Fortress. Their target was an aircraft plant in Bremen, Germany. In the course of their mission, Brown’s plane was repeatedly hit by ground fire and then again by a swarm of enemy fighter planes. A sister ship flying alongside Brown went down in flames. One of his four engines was disabled, and another was sputtering. His tail gunner was killed, three other crewmen were wounded and Brown himself was struck in the shoulder by enemy fire. Yet the heavily damaged B-17 miraculously remained aloft. Brown turned it toward the North Sea, hoping to keep it flying until they reached their home based in Kimbolton, England 250 miles away.

Glancing out the cockpit window, Lt. Brown saw a German fighter plane, a Messerschmitt, flying alongside. This, he thought, was the beginning of the end. His severely crippled bomber was a sitting duck for an enemy attacker. Unbelievably, the enemy aircraft did not attack. "The German pilot was nodding to us,'' Brown recalled. "But we assumed it was just a matter of time before he came in for the kill.'' Suddenly, to the surprise of the crew, the German pilot saluted, rolled to the right and flew off. Brown and his surviving B-17 crew made it safely back to England..

After the war, Brown remained in the Air Force, serving in many capacities until he retired in 1972. But the episode of the German who refused to attack a beaten foe haunted him. He was determined to find the enemy pilot who spared him and his crew.

Charles Brown wrote numerous letters of inquiry to German military sources, with little success. Finally, a notice in a newsletter for former Luftwaffe pilots elicited a response from Franz Stigler, a German fighter ace credited with destroying more than two dozen Allied planes. He, it turned out, was the angel of mercy in the skies over Germany on that fateful day just before Christmas 1943. It had taken 46 years, but in 1989 Brown found the mysterious man in the Messerschmidt. Careful questioning of Stigler about details of the incident removed any doubt.

Sometime after the war, Stigler had emigrated to Canada and was living near Vancouver. After an exchange of letters, Brown flew from his home in Miami to Canada for a reunion. From that time forward, the two men visited each other frequently, and appeared jointly before Canadian and American military audiences.

In his first letter to Brown, Stigler had written: "All these years, I wondered what happened to the B-17, did she make it or not?'' But why did the German not destroy his virtually defenseless enemy? "I didn't have the heart to finish off those brave men,'' Stigler later said. "I flew beside them for a long time. They were trying desperately to get home and I was going to let them do it. I could not have shot at them.” Stigler never reported the episode to his superiors.
After nearly 20 years of a wonderful friendship, both Charles Brown and Franz Stigler passed away in 2008. (A life in the balance is spared aloft: Airman finds counterpart who refused to shoot, Knight Ridder/Tribute News Service, December 28, 1995; Charles L. Brown Obituary". The Miami Herald. December 7, 2008.)

"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” (Luke 2:14) is the phrase that is often sung during the Christmas season. These are the words of the heavenly hosts who were with the angel that announced the birth of our Savior to shepherds who were keeping watch over their flocks by night. And later, during the course of His ministry, our Savior would offer these word of comfort, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27)

In the course of life here upon this earth, we each experience significant challenges. These challenges offer us the opportunity to grow in strength of character, to prepare for life beyond the grave, and most importantly, enable us the chance to exercise faith in our Savior Jesus Christ who has prepared and is showing us the way back to our Heavenly home from whence we came. It is through remembering and following Him that we experience that peace, and develop that strong desire to extend goodwill toward others.

This time of the year we witness a heightened sense of goodwill in our communities, with men and women rendering service to those in need, perhaps in desperate need. As we each fly over the North Sea of life toward our home base, our heavenly home, may we strive each day of the year to help one another, to take compassion upon one another, to love one another. Again, in the words of our Savior, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” (John 13:34)

May the Lord’s choicest blessings be with you in the noble, loving, selfless service that you render. Please know of our great love for you, and that you are continually in our prayers.

May you enjoy a wonderful Christmas season,

The Woodwards

December 2011 - The Executive Office of Ken Woodward

Dear Family,

November was very uneventful month , with very little to report except we had a fine Thanksgiving dinner, courtesy of Save Mart, and a week vacation from school to rest up for the two-week Christmas holiday, which I hope will be equally uneventful.

With the alleged end to the NBA labor problems and the projected loss of the Lakers in their first game on Christmas day, Aaron is probably in mourning.  He may not even feel like surfing for a season, and will get a real job.

I’ll probably put up a Christmas tree so that, keeping with tradition; I’ll have something to take down early Christmas morning

I’m sure there is more to say, but with the current economic trends of the country, I’ve had no choice but to close down the executive office for the remainder of the year and put my two employees on unemployment compensation.  I may move the office to Calcutta if congress doesn’t extend the current payroll tax relief due to expire at the end of this month.

And while I think of it, Carol, did you ever find my house key? You know the one you were supposed to turn in the day you gave up your Woodward name.  I see you use the name on your face book account but that doesn’t cut it.

Love,
Dad

December 2011 - Haupt, Levi & Torrie & Family

By November us Haupts are in full celebration mode. We’ve spent the month talking about next year’s Halloween costumes (we might need this much time, we cut it close last time, and Emma was not happy we didn’t all match) as well as things we’re grateful for. Our list includes being grateful for the baby, and our house, Emma’s school, and daddy’s job among others. Emma has gotten the kindergarten version of Thanksgiving courtesy of school. But before our feast of thanks, a few other fun moments took place.

I turned 29, on the 20th and that is the last time I’ll list that, so you’re just gonna have to do the math from now on. The girls and Levi treated me to an ice cream, brownie, and grandma word’s chocolate sauce sundae, yum my fave! By this point I am a LITTLE sick of cake, so that was just fine with me!

The best present was seeing our 3rd girl on an ultrasound later that week. Yep, you read right, three girls I know Levi looks up to my dad; I just didn’t think he’d take it so literally. The biggest blessing is the fact that everything looked normal and on time and the girls are very excited. She’ll make her debut in early April, due date is the 8th but I am sure I’ll have my 3rd c-section before that.

This Thanksgiving is Levi and my 9th Thanksgiving together, and I have gotten off pretty easy. We have usually been with family or if we weren’t lucky enough for that we’ve had friends to help us out. This is the second year that I’ve had to bake for us and the first time I’ve had to do an entire turkey. The first time I baked was a couple of years ago and I just did a turkey breast since it was only Levi and myself eating. This year we invited the missionaries serving in our ward and Levi’s brother, Adam, up from Portland. The meal turned out great and the girls loved our visitors. I am not nearly as scared anymore but I still prefer to be with more family.

We’ve extremely grateful for the spirit of the season, this time of year that we get to focus even more closely on our blessings, especially that of the birth of our Savior. We hope you enjoy yourselves this season and we look forward to fun Christmas stories!

Until the new year!

Love,

The Haupts

December 2011 - McClintock, Robert & Susan

Happy Holidays Family,

November went by swiftly. Some of us are just boring enough to not have anything of interest to share with the family.  Grandma Anna has been slowly slipping further into the ill effects of Lewy Body Disease.  She has since left behind reality.  A couple of years ago Aunt Susan was able to help Anna assemble a short life sketch. It is a valuable window on a person history that Anna can no longer recall.

In 1999 Alexis and Arianna visited in Sacramento.  They and the McClintock women had a wonderful time visiting Old Sacramento, Sutter's Fort, and Coloma, CA the site of the discovery of Gold in California.  Recently Aunt Susan came across those photographs.  Some are posted on Aunt Susan's Facebook page but she shares two today with the monthly Family Newswire submission.  These show the Woodward girls sitting at the base of Sutter's Mill where gold was discovered in 1848 in Coloma, CA.   (The Cannon boys should remember this location because they whitewater rafted from here several times with their dad in days gone by.)

And to mark the important highlight of early December, Aunt Susan shares a picture of the Bluebird Restaurant in Logan, Utah.  Grandpa and Grandma Woodward were honored there at their wedding luncheon on December 6th 1944. (You math mavens will quickly compute how many years ago they were married.) Grandpa Milton Woodward's poem about his appearing in his vest without his coat was written as a result of this important luncheon.

Love to all,

The McClintock

December 2011 - Mercier, Kelly & Jilina

The month of November found Jilina and I moving in with the Wilcox clan.  While we are grateful for Grandma's generosity in letting us stay with her, we are glad to be out of Utah county and in Salt Lake county.  Jilina has done well with adjusting to yet another school.  Jilina has been staying busy with orchestra where she plays the violin, softball where she plays 3rd and pitches, and swim team with Alexis.  We hope to add art lessons, volleyball and basketball in the future.

I have been substitute teaching and looking for a permanent teaching position.  I am in the process of divorce from Cesar and in a holding pattern with the courts for now.  I hope to have that settled soon.  We had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family this year and look forward to a fantastic Christmas.  We hope everyone has the same.

Love,

Kelly and Jilina Mercier

December 2011 - Wilcox, Todd & Tracy & Family

Hello all,

The Wilcox family has been doing well.  November has brought many changes.
We now have Kelly and Jilina living with us.  Our house has been very
active.  My kids LOVE having there aunt and cousin living with us and I love
having a "sister-wife" to help out with the cooking and cleaning!

Alexis and Brenton have been trying new things (i.e. Food, sports) that I
could never get them to do.  Amazing what peer pressure can do for kids.
(Note to self... Keep an eye on them!!!  Teen age years will be
interesting). Our most recent new adventure sent Alexis to the ER and
dentist.  Jilina is a GREAT softball player, unfortunately Alexis is not
since she has never played.  She ended up taking a softball to the face
while fielding a ground ball and ended up breaking a tooth and cutting her
face (four stitches).  She has decided to stick with swim team, a decision I
fully support.

Another fun thing this month... Seth is walking!  He is only 9 months old.
It is so cute seeing him waddle across the floor.  People are amazed when
they see him!  I'm sure more fun adventures are to come!

Love,
Tracy and family=

December 2011 - Woodward, Kevin & Tammy & Family

We’re on the threshold of December 2011.  In making preparations for Christmas, Tammy outlined a number of things we could do to get a jump on those preparations.  One was that of putting up the Christmas lights.  I remember many a Thanksgiving Day at the Cannon home in Fresno when Gary set out to get those lights positioned around the house.  In similar fashion, I found a wonderful window of good weather (a fine 60-degree day) and went about the task.  It all went up with an inordinate ease and precision.  I remember learning in a history class years ago that the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was assembled with nearly equal precision.  When the assemblers came to the last piece of the bridge, they found that piece to be 6 inches too long.  One might argue, with reasonable success, that this is better than being 6 inches too short.  I too found that after stringing 1,000 lights around the house, I had 6 inches of extra wire.  This I could deal with.

Next came the Christmas tree.  Never in the history of this branch of the family (no pun intended) has a Christmas tree been purchased prior to December 1st.  However, Tammy told me of some fine, full noble firs for sale at a nearby Costco about 6 miles from our home.  The tradition has always been to get a freshly cut Christmas tree.  The objective has always been to ensure that the tree is full and symmetrical.  Those at Costco fit the profile.  After transporting the tree home, we set it up and immediately administered water to it.  As I sat back in the couch and gazed at the evergreen in wonderment, I was overcome with emotion, and led to proclaim the words, “O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum”.  Tammy looked at me quizzically and asked, “What did you say?”  I responded, “Oh, did I not tell you that I can speak German?” (more on this story can be found in “The Tannenbaum Incident”, memoirs of Kristy and Carol, 1966.)

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.

Much love,

 The Woodwards

Hope you all had a Happy Halloween! Love, the Haupt girls

November 2011 - The Executive Office of Ken Woodward

Dear family,

I recently noted in my archives  an affidavit, written by Kevin and witnessed by Susan and Wendy, that he would stay home and take care of Susan while Corene, Wendy and I went to April 1973 general conference.   Big deal, he would have been 14, Susan 26.  I wonder what that young Capitalist charged me for that service?

I’m not looking forward to November.  In addition to a school holiday on Armistice Day, November 11, the schools take a full week off for Thanksgiving.  This is so the students can get acclimated for the two week vacation for Christmas.  Notice how the vacation time is a gradual increase from one day, to one week, to two weeks.  The schools do this so the participants  don’t get the Bends.  (Aaron, Bends is a very undesirable physical condition brought about  by too rapid a decompression.)

Widow Lowe and  I had a delightful 3- mile trip to the Kaiser clinic the other day for a flu shot.  It was such an uplifting  experience.  No matter how bad your health is, there are always a few people waiting in line who are in worse shape.

And when my uncle Frank would admonish me to “live the simple life”  he didn’t know how seriously I would take his advice. The most excitement going on in my life right now is watching the leaves fall.

I plowed my garden a few days ago.  That’s so I can get an early start with my tomatoes next spring.  At my age I usually don’t plan that far in advance, but it didn’t cost me anything.  There is a vast difference between plowing my garden  and subscribing for a full year to the Ensign and Church News.

Joshua gave his first talk in sacrament meeting on October 30.  He did very well.

To the only member of the family who is also a fan of the Dallas Cowboys.  Sunday night, October 30--Cowboys 7-Eagles 34. Those Cowboys were definitely suffering from the Bends.  But don’t despair.  There is always next year.

Love,  Dad

November 2011 - Cannon, Aaron & Mindy & Family

Tjena!

As we leave October behind and the sad passing of my 40th birthday I would be remiss if I didn't spend at least a brief moment reflecting. I have two thoughts I would like to share.  1)  If you were born before
me you are WAY over 40.  2)  If your name is Kimber you are almost 40.
Good times!

Speaking of birthday parties a quick head count at mine indicated that 15 adults and 30 children were in attendance.  What?!  Draw your own conclusions.  The word "Mormon" should be in there somewhere.

November will bring us a continuation of The Boys football season which includes his first ever playoff experience.  After every win Mindy and I look at each other and sigh...*another week of this*  Dont get me
wrong, it's been fun......3-5x a week......since the BEGINNING OF JULY.....for YOUTH FOOTBALL!
If only my Cowboys practiced this hard maybe they could beat a team that isn't already horrible.

November will also see the (real) Cannon family travel to Fresno for Thanksgiving.  In trying to decide what to do for Thanksgiving neither Mindy or I could remember why we don't go to Fresno anymore.  That
tells me it might be time to go!  Christmas  will likely see us in Utah.  The difference there of course is that I CAN tell you why I don't like going to Utah! (It begins with C and ends with old.)

Usually at this time of year Professional Basketball is in full swing. This year, it is not.  This is great news for Sacramento Kings fan because they are not out of the running yet!  Until they actually start playing games, the Kings will have a chance.

Mindy continues to co-chair the schools bake sale which means I pay for ingredients and then I pay for items at the bake sale.  That, dear family, is the OPPOSITE of a double dip.  Unless you look at it from the Schools perspective.  They are double dipping from me!
Jakob got a reprieve from his classroom of 35 into a classroom of 25.  Hannah has a classroom of 4.  Then again, who can afford pre-school anymore?

Until next month at which time I will have remembered why I don't visit Fresno and will be able to provide a full report.

November 2011 - Haupt, Levi & Torrie & Family

By October we are in full celebration mode. Charlotte had her birthday in September, we have Levi’s birthday in October, then Halloween, then my birthday in November, then Thanksgiving, then onto Christmas. This year was a big Birthday for Levi, the big 3-0. We took advantage of BYU’s independence and enjoyed an incredible game in Corvallis, OR against the Oregon State Beavers.  Many Beaver fans remarked that, it was the fullest that the visitors’ section has ever been. At one point I couldn’t hear the rest of the stadium over the cheers of the Cougar fans, we had so much fun!

Levi’s actual birthday was Monday the 17th but the big surprise was the following Monday when I called in some friends to help me throw a surprise party. We had a lot of fun and hope that it was a good way to start his 30s.

Halloween is a big deal in our house, this year was no different. We had a ward party which was great and then since we were all getting sick, we trick-or-treated indoors at the local mall, which was a little nuts, I don’t think I’ll do that again. We’re already getting ideas from the think-tank about the costumes for next year!

We get to find out what this 3rd little rugrat is next month so you’ll all have to wait until then.

We hope you’re enjoying this season as much as we are!

Until December!

Love,

November 2011 - McClintock, Robert & Susan

Aunt Susan

I am so sorry I missed October, and now here it is November.
Time is rushing by.  Not much to report from the Carmichael land grant.
So glad to read your submissions and follow up on Facebook.
I love the pictures that are submitted…the children are just springing up like weeds in the family.
Isn't that great!  We have such a terrific family.
Here is wishing you all a fine Thanksgiving holiday.

November 2011 - Woodward, Kevin & Tammy & Family

Dear Family:

Other than a quick trip to the Washington, D.C. area mid-month, the highlight of our October was our stake conference (October 29 – 30), and the wonderful visit we had with our presiding General Authority, Elder Paul V. Johnson of the Seventy.  Elder Johnson is the Church Commissioner of Education.  When I spoke with him early in October, he asked me how long I had been serving.  I told him that it has been about three and a half years.  He asked who reorganized the stake presidency at that time.  I replied that is was Elder Holland.  He then asked if we have had a visiting authority at stake conference since then.  I mentioned that Elder Richard J. Maynes of the Seventy had presided at our conference in October 2009.  He then said, “Boy, you’ve had Elder Holland and Elder Maynes.  You are certainly going to be disappointed with me!”  Yet nothing could be further from the truth.  He was powerful in his instruction to the stake, and ever so delightful during the time we had him spend the night in our home.

We returned home from our Adult Session of conference Saturday evening at about 9:30.  We spent the next hour and a half talking with Elder Johnson in the comfort of the living room.  He shared some very humorous and instructive stories about various church leaders.  He mentioned that while he was traveling with President Monson on the Huntsman jet to Michigan not long ago, President Monson let it be known that he has never tasted pizza.  Surprised, Elder Johnson asked President Monson if he ever had the desire to try it now.  President Monson simply said that although he had some interest, he really saw no reason to break the long streak that he has enjoyed to date by not eating it.  He also said that President Monson has an unmatched memory.  He can remember people and events from decades ago.  He told of a time when President Monson was walking with his son and they met an Asian man on the street who greeted them.  President Monson recognized the man from a previous meeting and acknowledged him, calling him by name.  His son later asked him where the two had met before.  President Monson told his son that they had met over 40 years ago in Korea.  However, he hadn’t seen or spoken to him since that time, and it was good to see him once again.

The long awaited holiday season has been set in motion.  We’ve had a couple of snow storms come our way, true to form, prior to Halloween.  However, I am happy to report that Nordstrom has announced that it will not decorate for Christmas, nor run any Christmas sales, until after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade crew has swept up all of the confetti between 77th and 34th Streets.

Much love,

The Woodwards

October 2011 - Picture of the Month

Very excited to be 3! Charlotte Haupt

October 2011 - Executive Office of Ken Woodward

Dear family,
First, I want to assure Adam that I plan to last much beyond the end of the year. I’m not going any place permanently soon.  If he spent a little more time chasing down seat belt violators he wouldn’t be worrying about my longevity. In fact, I’d be happy to accept Aaron’s invitation to join he and Adam in their February “tough mudder” run, but I’m sure my activity calendar will be full on that date.

On October 1 my parents celebrated their 92nd wedding anniversary.  I wasn’t disappointed that I wasn’t invited.

September was a slow month.  The most excitement I experienced was getting an inoculation for Shingles and a booster shot for everything that you get booster shots for. I had to get a new doctor because the “bird doctor”, as Corene always called  him because she couldn’t remember his name, “Ostrich,” retired and the new one wanted to impress me.  But I impressed her. She said she was impressed that I still had all my teeth.

Early morning seminary  is what the word implies, “early,” and gets earlier each day. Zack and  Joshua seems to have no problem,  but by the time I get them to seminary and from seminary to school I’m ready for my mid-morning nap, and the sun is hardly up..  At that time of day Rio Americano high school could use Adam as a cross-walk patrolman.  It is probably the only school in the country where each student, except my own, drives two cars to school, and the school provides valet parking. The parking lot is larger than the campus.  Oh, for the good old early morning school day meetings of Kevin and CHP officer Parker.

I attended “back to school” night.  It was a congenial activity and I met several of the boys’ teachers.  But what happened to the days when the women teachers wore dresses  and the men teachers wore shirts, pants, ties and jackets.

I haven’t yet decided on a trick-or-treat costume for Halloween but I still have a few days yet to think about it.

Love,  Dad

October 2011 - Cannon, Aaron & Mindy & Family

We are half way through football season and the Coastal Tritons are undefeated.  Actually.....they were unscored on until yesterday when mercifully the team they were beating 41-0 got into the end zone with about 2 seconds left on the clock.  Jakob plays all over the defensive side of the ball and is having a jolly good time.  School is in full swing and Hannah Grace is in her full preschool glory complete with backpack and lunch pail.  Jakob is old enough to understand that school is horrible but doesn't fully grasp the concept of having at least another 20 years of it in front of him.  Mindy is co-chairing the weekly bake sale at the school so that they can purchase things like pencils and paper.  This means that I purchase the ingredients for the bake sale, then purchase bake sale items at the bake sale.  It's the opposite of double dipping.  Other than that....there is nothing new to report.
Be safe out there......

Family!

Great news!  I have accepted a position as the stress management psychologist at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility called AToN Center.  Specifically I'm their biofeedback therapist.  I'm just starting a couple days a week and will be increasing days (hopefully sooner than later) as time goes on.  I'm also still working at the looney bin whenever I can take shifts.  The current program directer was my old boss at API, so she poached me away from API as soon as she could.  I've been here for 2 weeks and am adjusting really well.  It's a fantastic program and the clinicians are friendly and good at what they do.  Best part?  Private chef.  I get fantastic free lunches every day that make API lunches look like homeless shelter food.  AND I had to pay for API lunches.  Score.

Best wishes to all!

October 2011 - Haupt, Levi & Torrie & Family

September was a BIG month in our family. Emma started Kindergarten and still loves it. She also lost her two bottom front teeth, one in church no less, That is a sacrament meeting to remember. Charlotte is adjusting to being an only kid in the mornings. Charlotte also turned 3 and will be a sunbeam come January. Levi and I have both been very busy with our respective Church callings. The weather has finally turned cooler which is a welcome relief after August. We also decided to admit to ourselves that my being sick wasn’t ordinary, we’re expecting a third child due beginning of April!  That road has been a little bumpy, we had a scare the night of the Relief Society General Meeting, but overall an experience we’ve wanted for a while. The girls are way excited, Charlotte keeps looking at me like I am a time-bomb ready to detonate. She asks to see the ultrasound pictures often. We hope the rest of you are enjoying yourselves. We’ll keep you updated!

Until next month.
Love,

October 2011 - Woodward, Kevin & Tammy & Family

In Japanese the word for the month of September is Kugatsu. A literal translation would be “ninth month”. It’s amazing that we are this far into 2011.

During September, the Colorado Springs contingent of the family was primarily on the road. On September 1, I flew to Seattle to join Tammy who was already enjoying her stay with the Haupts. Enroute, I stopped in Salt Lake City for a layover. While there I spotted Levi, who had experienced a brutal week of business in Utah, aimlessly moving through the airport. I took him under my wing and escorted him the rest of the way home.

We enjoyed our time visiting with the Family Haupt. We were introduced to their wonderful home. We experienced Emma’s first day off to school, for which she by all appearances seemed eager to attend. She’s a quick study, and figured out the bus and school routine in short order. We also had the chance to participate in Charlotte’s third birthday celebration. We received the grand tour of the Puget Sound region. In fact I found that the very neighborhood in which Torrie and Levi live is a stone’s throw from where I Traveled regularly for business in 1988 and 1989 visiting the Boeing Company.

Tammy and I slipped over the board into Canada for a couple of days, traveling to Victoria, British Columbia. Washington State has a very impressive ferry system which got us there. While in Victoria, we took in the famous Butchart Gardens http://www.butchartgardens.com/, the government district, harbor area and an overall city tour. Victoria was beautiful, as is all of the northwest. We are certainly grateful for Torrie and Levi’s hospitality, and the chance to enjoy their family.

We traveled home on September 10, long enough to do a load of laundry that evening, and attend church the next day. On the morning of Monday the 12th, I headed out to Orlando for a week-long business conference. I was home for a week, and then turned around on Monday the 26th to head to Orlando again for another week of business. Tammy flew out to Salt Lake-Provo the same day I left for Orlando the second time. Once I finish, I will fly to Salt Lake to join her in Provo to visit Arianna, Alexis, Ryan, Maija and Averie.

At a 7000 foot elevation, fall can come rather early to Colorado Springs. Already we have snow on the top of Pikes Peak. Juugatsu, Japanese for October or “tenth month”, will bring the first snow of the season to this area and General Conference. We’re looking forward to this and the holiday season that will follow.

Much love,

The Woodwards

September 2011 - Executive office of Ken Woodward

Dear Family,
With the commencement of school on August 22, Joshua, Zachari and I began attending early morning seminary.  In 1970 when I became in charge of various stake ecclesiastical activities I changed the stake presidency meeting from a Tuesday evening , as was then the practice,  to early Sunday morning.  Our stake clerk, Norman Perry, then asked to be released.  He claimed there was not enough oxygen in the air that early in the morning.

After driving the three of us to the Stake Center for the past 10 mornings for seminary I’m beginning to believe that old Norm may have been on to something.

As some of you remembered.  I had a birthday late last month. I want to thank all of you who called or sent a card, and also all of you who didn’t.  I mention this only for one reason.  I grew up in such a touch environment that we were not asked what we wanted to be WHEN we grew up, but what we wanted to be IF we grew up.  I believe I may make it.

The tomato growing season is about over.  I want to tell Torrie and Levi that the Topsy Turvey upside-down tomato grower they gave me worked reasonable well but the picture on the box was an extreme exaggeration.

Now with the end of the summer gardening season the most exciting events I have to look forward to is watching the leaves fall and getting a flu shot.

Love, Dad

September 2011 - Cannon, Aaron & Mindy & Family

Hello August.  Goodbye August.

August has been a memorable month for the Cannon family (the real Cannon family.  Not those imposters from up north.)  Football has started again.  Jakob is a year bigger and a year smarter.  This is evidenced by his ability to count ahead during tackling drills and avoiding going up against guys twice his weight.  Brilliant!

Prison is still a horrible awful place to work (I can't even imagine living here) what with all the tarantulas and rattle snakes and blood and sweat and pepper spray and ......I'll just leave it at that
.
We are preparing for school to start.  So far our preparations have included looking at each other and saying "When does school start again?"  We haven't really gotten past that.  Hannah is very excited to start pre-pre-school.  Mindy is excited to have her out of the house.  I am excited to have one more thing to pay for.  Jakob is excited because he is always excited.

I have several friends who join me in the early for am surf sessions.  We usually go out around 545 am and finish at 7ish so we can be at work by 8.  This past thursday we went to one of our favorite spots in mission beach and had a great time.  Then around noon I checked the local San Diego news and see "Great White sighting shuts down Mission Beach."  Huh?  What?  RIGHT WHERE WE WERE 4 HOURS EARLIER!?!?!?!?!  That's right ladies and gentleman.  The Man in the Grey Suit had paid us a visit and we didn't even know.  My other favorite euphemism for Great Whites is "The Landlord."  Then there is also "apex predator" but I don't use that one quite as often.

My parenting book is finished.  We have had interest from two agents.  We will see where it goes.

Anybody interested in joining Adam and myself for a "tough mudder" run in February let Adam know.  We need teammates....in other words people to step in when we start yelling at each other.

September 2011 - Cannon, Adam & Erica & Family

Hello and Hi.
I know it has been a long time since we posted.  I put all the blame on Maja.  I am usually safe that way.  Anyway, We have been doing fine and have been busy.
During summer vacation, we went to Lake Tahoe for a couple of days and had lots of fun.  Painted some of the rooms in the house and tried to relax.
Summer is over and the girls are all back in school.  We learned Maja made it into GATE.  I think its for smart kids.  I was never in it, so I don't really know, you should ask my brother and two sisters, they can tell you more about it.  Annika is in 1st grade and loves it.  Maja is also learning how to play the piano.  I expect Annika is also in soccer again and played her first game last Saturday.  She did not score a goal so I don't have to fork over any money yet, but she almost did and that worries me.  I need to change my arrangement from paying her a dollar for every goal to something less attractive.  Ava is still very very sneaky and Lilah dances every chance she gets.  We did stop by Grandpa and made our annual visit to Sacramento.  We should be good for the rest of the year.  Hopefully Grandpa lasts that long...
Thank You
Cannon, Adam family.

September 2011 - Ekins, Justin & Emily

We’ve arrived in Boston and settled in, and so far it has been great. We have met so many amazing people, and we are really enjoying the many fun things to do in this area. We’ve gone kayaking and sailing on the Charles River, we go bike riding, running, enjoying Harvard square and Boston’s historic Italian North End. Justin starts classes at HBS this Wednesday and I plan to continue working on my dissertation and working at home. To make some money while Justin is also in school, I’m the polling director for Reason Foundation. We’ve just released a new poll, which you can find at www.reason.com/poll. The political science Harvard professors have so far been really welcoming and have offered to let me join their workshops and discussion/reading groups. So hopefully this will help provide me with an additional community.

A few weeks ago we took a trip to Niagara Falls, which was amazing. We’re trying to take advantage of all the fun places to go to on the East Coast. We’ve attached some pictures.
