November 2011 - The Executive Office of Ken Woodward
Dear family,
I recently noted in my archives an affidavit, written by Kevin and witnessed by Susan and Wendy, that he would stay home and take care of Susan while Corene, Wendy and I went to April 1973 general conference. Big deal, he would have been 14, Susan 26. I wonder what that young Capitalist charged me for that service?
I’m not looking forward to November. In addition to a school holiday on Armistice Day, November 11, the schools take a full week off for Thanksgiving. This is so the students can get acclimated for the two week vacation for Christmas. Notice how the vacation time is a gradual increase from one day, to one week, to two weeks. The schools do this so the participants don’t get the Bends. (Aaron, Bends is a very undesirable physical condition brought about by too rapid a decompression.)
Widow Lowe and I had a delightful 3- mile trip to the Kaiser clinic the other day for a flu shot. It was such an uplifting experience. No matter how bad your health is, there are always a few people waiting in line who are in worse shape.
And when my uncle Frank would admonish me to “live the simple life” he didn’t know how seriously I would take his advice. The most excitement going on in my life right now is watching the leaves fall.
I plowed my garden a few days ago. That’s so I can get an early start with my tomatoes next spring. At my age I usually don’t plan that far in advance, but it didn’t cost me anything. There is a vast difference between plowing my garden and subscribing for a full year to the Ensign and Church News.
Joshua gave his first talk in sacrament meeting on October 30. He did very well.
To the only member of the family who is also a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Sunday night, October 30--Cowboys 7-Eagles 34. Those Cowboys were definitely suffering from the Bends. But don’t despair. There is always next year.

As we leave October behind and the sad passing of my 40th birthday I would be remiss if I didn't spend at least a brief moment reflecting. I have two thoughts I would like to share. 1) If you were born before
me you are WAY over 40. 2) If your name is Kimber you are almost 40.
Good times!
Speaking of birthday parties a quick head count at mine indicated that 15 adults and 30 children were in attendance. What?! Draw your own conclusions. The word "Mormon" should be in there somewhere.
November will bring us a continuation of The Boys football season which includes his first ever playoff experience. After every win Mindy and I look at each other and sigh...*another week of this* Dont get me
wrong, it's been fun......3-5x a week......since the BEGINNING OF JULY.....for YOUTH FOOTBALL!
If only my Cowboys practiced this hard maybe they could beat a team that isn't already horrible.
November will also see the (real) Cannon family travel to Fresno for Thanksgiving. In trying to decide what to do for Thanksgiving neither Mindy or I could remember why we don't go to Fresno anymore. That
tells me it might be time to go! Christmas will likely see us in Utah. The difference there of course is that I CAN tell you why I don't like going to Utah! (It begins with C and ends with old.)
Usually at this time of year Professional Basketball is in full swing. This year, it is not. This is great news for Sacramento Kings fan because they are not out of the running yet! Until they actually start playing games, the Kings will have a chance.
Mindy continues to co-chair the schools bake sale which means I pay for ingredients and then I pay for items at the bake sale. That, dear family, is the OPPOSITE of a double dip. Unless you look at it from the Schools perspective. They are double dipping from me!
Jakob got a reprieve from his classroom of 35 into a classroom of 25. Hannah has a classroom of 4. Then again, who can afford pre-school anymore?
Until next month at which time I will have remembered why I don't visit Fresno and will be able to provide a full report.

November 2011 - Haupt, Levi & Torrie & Family
By October we are in full celebration mode. Charlotte had her birthday in September, we have Levi’s birthday in October, then Halloween, then my birthday in November, then Thanksgiving, then onto Christmas. This year was a big Birthday for Levi, the big 3-0. We took advantage of BYU’s independence and enjoyed an incredible game in Corvallis, OR against the Oregon State Beavers. Many Beaver fans remarked that, it was the fullest that the visitors’ section has ever been. At one point I couldn’t hear the rest of the stadium over the cheers of the Cougar fans, we had so much fun!
Levi’s actual birthday was Monday the 17th but the big surprise was the following Monday when I called in some friends to help me throw a surprise party. We had a lot of fun and hope that it was a good way to start his 30s.
Halloween is a big deal in our house, this year was no different. We had a ward party which was great and then since we were all getting sick, we trick-or-treated indoors at the local mall, which was a little nuts, I don’t think I’ll do that again. We’re already getting ideas from the think-tank about the costumes for next year!
We get to find out what this 3rd little rugrat is next month so you’ll all have to wait until then.
We hope you’re enjoying this season as much as we are!

I am so sorry I missed October, and now here it is November.
Time is rushing by. Not much to report from the Carmichael land grant.
So glad to read your submissions and follow up on Facebook.
I love the pictures that are submitted…the children are just springing up like weeds in the family.
Isn't that great! We have such a terrific family.

Dear Family:
Other than a quick trip to the Washington, D.C. area mid-month, the highlight of our October was our stake conference (October 29 – 30), and the wonderful visit we had with our presiding General Authority, Elder Paul V. Johnson of the Seventy. Elder Johnson is the Church Commissioner of Education. When I spoke with him early in October, he asked me how long I had been serving. I told him that it has been about three and a half years. He asked who reorganized the stake presidency at that time. I replied that is was Elder Holland. He then asked if we have had a visiting authority at stake conference since then. I mentioned that Elder Richard J. Maynes of the Seventy had presided at our conference in October 2009. He then said, “Boy, you’ve had Elder Holland and Elder Maynes. You are certainly going to be disappointed with me!” Yet nothing could be further from the truth. He was powerful in his instruction to the stake, and ever so delightful during the time we had him spend the night in our home.
We returned home from our Adult Session of conference Saturday evening at about 9:30. We spent the next hour and a half talking with Elder Johnson in the comfort of the living room. He shared some very humorous and instructive stories about various church leaders. He mentioned that while he was traveling with President Monson on the Huntsman jet to Michigan not long ago, President Monson let it be known that he has never tasted pizza. Surprised, Elder Johnson asked President Monson if he ever had the desire to try it now. President Monson simply said that although he had some interest, he really saw no reason to break the long streak that he has enjoyed to date by not eating it. He also said that President Monson has an unmatched memory. He can remember people and events from decades ago. He told of a time when President Monson was walking with his son and they met an Asian man on the street who greeted them. President Monson recognized the man from a previous meeting and acknowledged him, calling him by name. His son later asked him where the two had met before. President Monson told his son that they had met over 40 years ago in Korea. However, he hadn’t seen or spoken to him since that time, and it was good to see him once again.
The long awaited holiday season has been set in motion. We’ve had a couple of snow storms come our way, true to form, prior to Halloween. However, I am happy to report that Nordstrom has announced that it will not decorate for Christmas, nor run any Christmas sales, until after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade crew has swept up all of the confetti between 77th and 34th Streets.
