November 2009 - Executive Office of Ken Woodward
Dear family
October was such a delightful month I could hardly wait to submit this report. I got a flu shot and Joshua and Zachari got the flu. All three of us were delighted. I was delighted because I didn’t get it, and the boys were delighted that they were able to miss several days of school. Now this may sound like an anomaly, but my PhD grandson, as usual, came through last month with such a profound statement that my entire outlook on life has radically changed. He said, concerning September, “Nothing good happened. Happily nothing terrible happened either.” Isn’t that a balanced way to look on life? Only Aaron could have done it. Not only that, but probably he is the only member of our family who knew that the beginning of the Spanish Inquisition occurred during the month of September.
Then my joy was further enhanced by re-reading Susan’s contribution last month. How excited she sounded in the privilege she and Bob had to entertain that gold-plated cat, Rocco. But Bob wasted an opportunity that he may never have again. He should have taken more time to bond. After that visit Susan must have looked at Bob and asked, relating to the raising of Emily, “Where did we go wrong?” I can hardly wait for a report on the return visit of those three southern Californians west of I-5 at Christmas.
The Haupt parents must be so proud of Torrie and Levi. Torrie said “We had Levi’s parents for a “fun visit.” After unloading the grandkids on Levi’s parents and then taking off on a 2nd honeymoon one has to wonder, “Fun for whom?”
And Alexis needn’t apologize for not doing Ryan’s English lessons. Let him be warned. The time will come, probably too late, that he will realize that the ability to compose a complete sentence will be far more valuable to his resume than knowing the formula for the surface area of a sphere. I know the formula only because I learned it through helping Zack with his 6th grade math.
I’m still so delighted, I’d like to have said something about Jilena’s cat Clarence but Kelly has pretty much kept him under wraps. And as you all know I have to verify all my statements through at least two reliable sources.
Because news was so sparse from Sacramento this month I just wanted some of you to know by citing the above that I read the Newswire each month very carefully. I’m also aware that some of you frequently seem to have nothing whatsoever to say. But that’s OK for now, I’m expecting the Yankees to win the World Series and thus add to the large number of milkshakes Kevin owes me.

Happy Halloween Family!
We decided this year to go all out and actually dress up, it being Maija's first Halloween. The inspiration came from Maija's favorite movie Kung Fu Panda (I've tried Disney movies and Pixar movies, but she likes this one best). The characters we decided to be I think may say something about our personalities. Maija dressed as "Po" the Panda and main character (as she has let me know many times that she is the main character in this family), Ryan dressed as "Oogwe" the wise turtle and spiritual leader (quite self explanatory), and I chose Master Tigress (one of Po's rivals and the best at everything). Yep, that about sums us up. Actually I didn't want to cross dress and she is basically the only female.

Well we survived our midterms, barely. We each pulled a couple of all nighters to finish our work. Maija can't complain though. We almost have her sleeping through the night as she generally wakes up around 5am for a bottle, then sleeps till 8. Not bad. She is trying VERY hard to walk and gibber jabbers all the time. She has said Mama and Daddy and we have fun taking turns jabbering at each other. When we do find a Sunday that we can sleep in, we try to take advantage of it. Unfortunately, even though last night was daylight savings time and we were supposed to get an extra hour of sleep, Maija didn't get the memo and woke up anyways. In order to appease her, we let her out of her crib, shut the bedroom door (we sleep in the same room) and let her play around with her toys while we caught a few more winks. But Maija has learned to climb onto the bed and this is what happens when she does grow weary of trying to get us out of bed to play with her (see attached picture). She kicks me out of bed. Boy we sure do love her though.
We've started a new tradition which helps us utilize our food storage. We make bread every Sunday; this also means I don't have to buy bread. It's been really fun and we enjoy the time together and the new recipes that food network puts out.
Ryan is busy finding an internship for this spring and summer and was quite successful in acquiring a few interviews. Unfortunately some of these companies will take him away from Provo, which means Maija and I get to try and survive without Ryan all summer...Oi. But it will be worth it in the end and I'm excited to see where he gets called off to.

November 2009 - Bos, Rick & Kristy
Dear Family,
I missed the October newsletter and here we are into November. However, I would like to tell you a little about September, as Rick and I went to Brazil for a Music Trade Show. The trip was great, the people are friendly and embracing, and the food is wonderful. Needless to say, I had a great time. While there we spent a few days in Rio and the rest of the time in Sau Paulo. I have enclosed a few pictures to prove that I really was there, and in fact safely returned.
A word about Rio. As you may know, they have been chosen to host the Olympics in 2016 (think that is the year.) I am happy for the Brazilians for having this honor. However, Rio is NOT all it is cracked up to be. It is essentially a city of slums, with a few beautiful beaches. Crime and gangs pretty much run the city, and there are places the police refuse to enter. They are going to have to do a lot of "face lifting" in Rio before they will be ready for the Olympics. Good luck to them.
We also went to the one of the areas Rick served on his mission. We went to Church and had dinner with the Bishop of the ward, which was one of his converts, low those many years ago. It was a wonderful way to finish off the trip, as we left on Sunday to return to the United States.
I was glad to be home, after having been gone 12 days. Todd accused me of abandoning my granddaughter, Katelyn. The other grand kids recognized me just fine, but Katelyn was a bit shy, for about 10 minutes. She and I are back in the saddle again.
As many of you know (and reminded us) Carol and I turned 60 YEARS OLD, this month. I woke up on the morning of October 22 and everything on my body was still where I left it. So turning 60 wasn't as traumatic as it could have been. I look forward to another 60 years.

November 2009 - Cannon, Aaron & Mindy & Family
The first two weeks of October were spent on Vacation. This is the first time in my entire life I have taken a two week vacation. They are 10x better than a one week vacation instead of just 2x better like I had expected. I felt like I was better prepared to go back to work and suffer the shankings, yelling, screaming, banging, cursing, pooping, peeing, gassing, (*&^(&*^ing, !@#(%*$!ing, etc. I am now very jealous of grandpa who is, of course, on a permanent vacation. Lucccccckkkkkeeeeee.
Jakob continues to make his way through the first grade. Hannah continues to make her way through her mother’s nerves. Mindy continues to make her way through motherhood.

November 2009 - Cannon, Adam & Erica & Family
Hello.
Fun month. We are still arguing over what we are going to name the next kid. Maja and Annika have decided this is now their house, and they are going to play and break and destroy what ever they want. Ava thinks she is 4 and tries to jump down all of the stairs at once; this is the girl who trips over nothing, alot. Erica celebrated another anniversary of the day she turned 20, and I worked with a lot of bad people. I got...had...was given the opportunity to observe an autopsy this month. We had another fatal DUI crash and the DA wanted me to observe the autopsy of the passenger who was killed, so I could testify in court the cause of death. I asked the DA why me, and not the Doctor and expert who is going to actully do the autopsy and the DA said, "Doctors don't know how to testify in court." (That was for Aaron) So, I went and now I have to testify that the doctor said this 20 year old girl was killed because of the crash. I like court. It is fun making the Defense Attorney look foolish. "Officer Cannon, How is it that you can remember the traffic stop with my client over 4 months ago and not all of the other traffic stops you have made?" Answer, "I can remember because your client was the only one driving the wrong way on the freeway, in a pursuit, for over 15 miles, who crashed into a 7-11, and ran away from the car, completly naked, in the last 4 months." "Objection your Honor, speculation." "I'll allow it."

November 2009 - Ekins, Justin & Emily
This summer and fall has been a busy one and somehow Justin and I managed to have two very important weeks for us happen at the same time! Justin is in the process of applying to business school, and I am in the process of taking the equivalent to my comprehensive exams. For my program, our exams consist of writing two papers of publishable quality that you'd find in an academic journal. Justin applied to two business schools for first round and their due dates were during the same week that my first field paper was due. We had a fun and work-filled summer preparing for these things and we helped each other through the process. We spent many late nights with Justin reviewing my paper and me editing his business school application essays. I passed my first field paper! Which I'm really happy about. I'm now working on my second field paper. Through this we've started a new routine where we get up early, around 6:30am, we carpool together and I take Justin to Century City and then I go to UCLA. Then in the evening around 7 or 8 I pick Justin up, and then we work from home. When we're not working, we play with our cat Rocco who is getting big!! He's 20 pounds!!!
My research is going well. I really love learning about politics and the economy. I'm currently researching economic well-being in the United States throughout the 20th century. You've probably heard a lot of talk about how much worse off the US is now than 30 years ago...yea, surprising, but that is what the academics are saying. Looking at real income statistics, its understandable why they are saying this. The upper income groups have improved dramatically in real income terms, but the middle and lower income groups have stagnated. Although this isn't ideal, considering income doesn't take into account what that income can purchase. This would require considering how much things cost (prices), the quality of the goods, and the advent of new goods and services. I'm working on creating a new measure for economic well-being that will take into account lowering prices, increases in quality, and advances in technology. You can check out my latest research at:

Justin and me at his 10 year high school reunion.
Our good friend premiered at LA Fashion Week this year! We are so proud of her, she is very entrepreneurial. She and her sister make these very elaborate and pretty headbands and they've established relationships with Nordstrom throughout the US and Canada. Their company is establishing relationships with lots of other companies and events, for example their headbands are going to be part of the Emmys--and also Hillary Duff wore one of their head bands in last night's episode of Gossip Girl! They also are working with Jerell Scott, who was the featured designer at Fashion Week, and all of his models work their headbands. You can check them out at http://www.truebirds.com/ Anyway, Heather invited us to the Fashion Week afterparty, hence the red carpet.
We came up to Northern California to visit friends and family and we decided to bring kitty Ekins, Rocco. We decided that his name is short for Rockefeller and want to name our pets after famous 19th Century capitalists. Anyway, Rocco loved my parents' house with all the rooms and places to run and hide. You can really tell how his fur makes him look like a little leopard-if only he'd let us walk him on a leash like other good savannah cats do! He's really big now, about 20 pounds, and long!
This is a funny picture of Justin. We were visiting with friends for another friend's wedding and we took this inflatable mattress with us. Justin had some trouble waking up and insisted that he should stay in bed in order to help deflate the mattress.

November 2009 - Haupt, Levi & Torrie & Family
This has been one crazy fun month! We are in major “dejunk” mode trying to prepare for our move down south. Levi keeps teasing me that I’ll acquire an accent, and I have to tell you, I feel doomed. I can’t even watch movies without picking up an accent (especially a southern one) so we’ll see. We’re also trying to get our Mexican on, eating all the Mexican we can since the most Mexican thing down in VA that I know of at this point is Taco Bell :) Hopefully there is a mom and pop store that I don’t know about.
The girls are doing great. Emma is getting so much better at sharing and expressing her feelings without the meltdowns (at least most days), and Charlotte is walking more and more. She’ll walk freely across the floor instead of just lunging for the nearest piece of furniture.
We had a fantastic Halloween. We were the “Counts”, Levi and Emma were vampires, while Charlotte was a vampire in bat form, I of course was the victim (and not just from these three as vampires ;). All in all a great month and we can’t wait for our next round of adventures to start.

Though Uncle Bob has spent the October weekends chasing up and down football fields shooting the Sacramento City College football games, for the most part it has been another quiet month for the McClintocks.
Uncle Bob and Aunt Susan expanded their "artistic" horizon by supporting a family in their ward whose daughter presented a showing of artwork during Sacramento's "Second Saturday" event. On the second Saturday of each month different areas of the city host art "showings" in some fashion or another. There are photographers who display their best photographs plus sculptors, painters, and musicians who bring out their best work for patrons looking for something unique. It was as much fun running into members of the ward who came to the event as it was getting acquainted with budding young artists. Uncle Bob is on track to display some of his best photographic work in upcoming Second Saturday events. In the meantime don't forget his photographic work is just a click away.

November 2009 - Slade, Jeff & Crystal & Family
Well, I am sitting home in my nice warm house, on a Friday NOT working because we have had 2 snow days in a row. The kids love it. I love it too. The roads aren't that bad, but the busses can't make it, so we all get time off. Luckily it is built into our schedule so we won't have to make it up at the end of the year. The only sad thing for the kids is they won't have their Halloween parties today. Felicity is a Cat, Andrew is a Lion, and Mathew has declared himself to old for trick or treating so he is passing out candy instead. (Last year he would not trick or treat either.) Tonight is the ward Halloween party. Tomorrow we are going to hit a few houses in the neighborhood, but mainly head over to the high school (where I work) and go door to door there. That way we are out of the cold and supporting my work. Jeff has to work, but is hoping to get off alittle early. So far the school year has flown by, first quarter is over and we had conferences. It was nice to hear great things about my kids. This year over all has been so much better than the last, well, 4 years.

November 2009 - Westover, Mel & Carol
October has been a beautiful month. The weather here has been wonderful. It is also a month full of birthdays!! This was the big one for me. Thank you Kevin for your phone call. We need to connect. Thanks Susan and dad for calling. I always enjoy talking with you. I had a great day. At school the other second grade teachers ordered a lunch from DiCicco's and we had a great lunch along with birthday presents. Also, Erica and I got to celebrate our birthdays with a family dinner. My good friend, Camille, and I share a birthday, so we went and had dessert. Turning 60 is interesting. Also, Aaron had a birthday.
Our ACN business is still going. Mel has meetings everyday and has over 550 reps and over 3,000 customer points. Got to hand it to him. He is a hard worker. We have met some awesome, wonderful people which is another plus for the business.
School is still going. My autistic student usually keeps me laughing. He is a very, very sweet child; but, he is definitely autistic. The whole class is very kind to him. I am proud of my students for understanding that he has disabilities, and they play with him and treat him like everyone else.
We are well and happy. Hope everyone has a great month.

This month has come and gone quickly. Alexis and Brenton are off track until Nov 16th. My dad will be moving out soon and into his own house. Todd and I are doing well.
At the beginning of this month Todd took the kids to Lake Powell with his family. I had to work so I stayed home. They had a lot of fun and I had a quiet weekend. It was great. Brenton caught a fish, too (see the Picture of the Month).
Then we had a visit from Kimber and her family. They came to Utah for the TCU vs BYU game. We had fun despite the results of said game. It almost was a family reunion. We were just missing Kelly. We hope to see her soon!

November 2009 - Woodward, Kevin & Tammy & Family
The highlight of our October was the chance we had to host Elder Richard J. Maynes of the Seventy, as he presided over our stake conference. Upon meeting him at the Colorado Springs Airport on a Saturday at noon, we took a drive past the site of our future institute building across the street from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS), and then on to Panera Bread for lunch. After arriving at the stake center, we had a little priesthood interview time, and then met with the other members of the expanded stake presidency (which includes our stake executive secretaries and stake clerk). At 4:00 PM we conducted our Stake Priesthood Leadership Session, and then enjoyed dinner in the high council room which Tammy and the wives of the stake presidency members had prepared. At 7:00 PM we commenced our Adult Session of conference. At the conclusion at 9:00 PM, we slowly made our way to the stake offices and then took Elder Maynes home to allow him to get some rest. However once we got home, we all sat in the living room together and talked for quite some time.
The next morning we had breakfast and then rushed off to a meeting with the youth and young single adults ages 16 – 25. Since Arianna is part of that demographic, she joined us. The General Session started promptly at 10:00 AM. Though we had 1,000 members in the stake center, we broadcasted this session to three other buildings in the stake where another 1,100 members were in attendance. After our General Session, we had a 30 minute “wrap-up” with members of the stake presidency, and then enjoyed lunch (again provided by Tammy and the wives of the stake presidency members). We were joined by the President of the Denver Temple, President Baer, and his wife. Following lunch, Elder Maynes and I made our way to the airport to allow him to catch a 3:45 PM flight to Salt Lake City. He eventually arrived at his home in Park City at 6:30 PM.
What impresses me is that these brethren, members of the Quorum of the Twelve and the Quorums of the Seventy, do this week after week, somewhere in the world. Now on a slightly different topic, we are in the midst of the World Series, and yes, dad stands with the American League and I the National League as has been the tradition now for 43 years. It's looking extremely rocky for the Phillies at this point. A potential loss for the Phillies, combined with the National League's loss of the All-Star game back in July will put me at a deficit of two milkshakes that I will owe dad for the year. To this, quoting Uncle Frank, all I can say to dad is that "I would rather owe these milkshakes to him all our lives, than to cheat him out of them." However, the reality is that on my next visit to Sacramento, we will be stopping by Leatherby's.
The next morning we had breakfast and then rushed off to a meeting with the youth and young single adults ages 16 – 25. Since Arianna is part of that demographic, she joined us. The General Session started promptly at 10:00 AM. Though we had 1,000 members in the stake center, we broadcasted this session to three other buildings in the stake where another 1,100 members were in attendance. After our General Session, we had a 30 minute “wrap-up” with members of the stake presidency, and then enjoyed lunch (again provided by Tammy and the wives of the stake presidency members). We were joined by the President of the Denver Temple, President Baer, and his wife. Following lunch, Elder Maynes and I made our way to the airport to allow him to catch a 3:45 PM flight to Salt Lake City. He eventually arrived at his home in Park City at 6:30 PM.
What impresses me is that these brethren, members of the Quorum of the Twelve and the Quorums of the Seventy, do this week after week, somewhere in the world.
