September 2009 - Executive Office of Ken Woodward
Dear family,
School started on August 24 and Joshua and Zachari have been introduced to an expanded look at what lies ahead. They are finding that middle school involves an entirely different experience from what they have been accustomed to for the past seven years. Six classroom, six teachers, two combination locks, PE everyday, and that is just the beginning. Only time will tell whether they can survive this great cultural shock. The only thing that continues the same is the makeup of their lunches.
The three of us attended the Elizabeth Lowe family reunion on August 1 in Franklin. I met cousins which I had not seen for possible 70 years, and some of their children that I never knew existed. We also visited “the sisters” (Clarice and Bonnie), stopped at the CORNER for a moment of silent reflection, and viewed the old Milton and Erma Woodward residence. I’m including a picture of it. Particularly note the condition of the grounds. Undoubted the local people will be making a pitch shortly to include the home as an Idaho State historic site.
As this was probably my last visit to the town prior to the call from above, I feel impressed to record for posterity some of the highlights and observation of the occasion. If you aren’t interested you can stop reading here.
The town looks good, although it would probably look better after a big snow storm. The city officials were anxiously awaiting funds from President Obama’s stimulus program as no improvements have been made to any of the infrastructure since the Eisenhower administration. The unemployment rate is extremely low, mostly through the long- time service program of doing each other’s laundry.
I missed the annual Idaho Day parade, but reports of the event were very favorable. Only one hitch was mentioned. The backhoe on which the Grand Master was to ride had to be jump started. One reported that the parade looked like three people going to lunch.
I was able to visit my brother Ross and his wife. Their house burned to the ground on July 3, 2008, but the insurance company rebuilt the house which this time included inside plumbing. Ross and Marjean were inconvenienced for a few months during construction as they had to live in a motel, but they experience no permanent losses. All their non-replaceable possessions were removed from the old house before the fire started.
Franklin’s popular Mall, anchored at each end by LaTienda general store and gas station was doing a brisk business, mostly from the sale of Idaho state lottery tickets to the Utah saints.
I had planned to “do lunch” with a long-time friend, Garrison Harris, owner and sole proprietor of Harris Denture Design (located on the site formerly occupied by Sam Handy’s drug store and fountain), but at the last minute lunch had to be cancelled as Gary had to respond to a 911 call from the sheriff’s office. One of his customers ran out of Fixodent Extra Hold Denture Adhesive Powder, and had used some Gorilla Super Glue on his uppers.
I had a pleasant afternoon golfing (in the pig’s eye I did) on the beautiful 18-hole golf course which is the center piece of the exciting (at least that’s what the developer’s brochure says) Legacy Ranch project immediately south of the Franklin metropolitan area. After constructing streets and sidewalks, installing all the necessary utilities, and beginning the construction of three houses the project went south, way south. Every member of the city council that voted for the approval of that monstrosity should be banished to Preston for life.

September 2009 - Bessey, Ryan & Alexis
Upon hearing Grandpa's threat to cut off those who don't contribute to the Newsletter we decided to surface. So here is our story.
We have been parents for 7 months now and we enjoy every waking second of it (sleeping hours don't count.) Maija is a smart, beautiful girl with her Mom's personality, her Dad's good looks and we are not too sure where she got her energy from... she surpasses both Ryan and I. Baby girl sits up on her own, laughs, smiles, crawls like a maniac, and loves to call out my name whether she is happy or angry, and she loves giving me kisses. We've noticed many fun quirks like she likes to play "wack a mole" with anything on the ground that moves quickly: hands, feet, bugs, toys, etc.
Ryan and I are both still going to school (almost done! yay! Well, at least I am) I'm taking it easy and although I only have eight more classes I won’t graduate till Fall 2010. Ryan is staying for his masters so you will know where to find us for the next couple of years.
We've had a splendid summer (Maija and I love summer since Ryan stays at home more...during the Fall and Winter semesters the Clyde building sees more of him than we do). Maija and I had the opportunity to visit with Grandma and Grandpa this past month and I still can't tell if Maija or the grandparents were more excited to see each other.
Right now we are working as managers for Suzanne's and Uncle John's student housing just south of campus. We love the set up. But this last little bit of the month we've been scrambling to get people to sign contracts and we are starting to understand what poor Craig had to deal with all by himself the past couple of years. Thank goodness we still have him to help us! It really is fun and a terrific learning opportunity... for instance, I've learned that I am a control freak at heart, I HAVE to be in charge of everything and I have to know everything.
I've found that I have a new hobby, coupon shopping! My sister in law Amber and I get up at 6 am to raid Walgreens and Rite aid... and then later hit up Smiths and Albertsons...only to MAKE MONEY!!! no kidding! my latest trip I paid 14 dollars out of pocket for $30 worth of good quality groceries, then I get a rebate (cash) and register rewards so I end up getting everything for free and then make $10.50, not bad eh? I'm pretty proud, thank you Amber!!!
Ryan is chugging away at his Civil Engineering classes, he is really quite good with math and physics and not a bad teacher either. He was a Teacher's Assistant this past summer for Dr. Christensen and he would come home and go through the student's tests and homework with me, trying to explain everything to me... and oddly enough I followed the math and the physics behind the work... and I have only had a 1st year college level calculus class. He might need to consider teaching as an option. Well, that about sums up our little lives here in the Bubble (Provo).

September 2009 - Bos, Rick & Kristy
Hello Family,
We are alive and well. We just got back from Seattle where we spent 5 days in beautiful 70 degree weather, while 2/3 of the United States was experiencing 90 degree weather.
The Seattle area is beautiful and we regretted leaving. However, responsibilities are home necessitated our return; work and work. Starting September 1st Kristy will be teaching a 10 week course at BYU for those students getting a minor in ESL or as Utah calls it, a Bilingual Endorsement. No you don't have to be bi-lingual to get an endorsement for teaching. However, taking the classes and getting the endorsement gives teachers and understanding of and strategies of how to better teach those students who have English as a second language, and will make them even more employable when they begin their teaching career. In California it is referred to as a CLAD credential and it took me two years and my first born child to get mine (back in the day.) Now students can come out of school with it, if they are smart enough to get the minor. At any rate, I was invited to take the BYU training (6 days @ 8 hours/day) back in June and then offered this job for the Fall 2009 semester. My section is already full (25 students, a pittance compared to my regular classroom numbers, right Carol?) and I will be teaching it on Tuesday evening from 6:50-9:30 pm. WISH ME LUCK!
Enclosed are a few pictures of our trip to Seattle just to prove to your how beautiful it is. The Cascade Mountains are gorgeous. We went there for, what else, a business trip for Rick.
For the younger folks in the crowd, you will probably recognize the name Alice in Chains, and Layne Staley. There is a Tribute/Remembrance for him every year for the last 8 years, sponsored by his mother, and all proceeds go to supporting several drug rehabs. Layne died of a drug overdose. His mother is a lovely woman who doesn't want this to happen to others. Rick went there to donate one of their products and just attend. It was a lovely event.
One more thing, but keep it a secret. On Friday, August 28th, Grandpa's 86th birthday, we are celebrating by taking Sarah Christiansen, (and Todd) to a Montgomery Gentry concert in Wendover, NV. Sarah loves them and Rick knows several of the band members, so they are getting us tickets, and maybe we will be able to get her backstage to meet some of them. Shhh, she doesn't know about this yet. Dad, how do you enjoy the concert vicariously.

September 2009 - Cannon, Aaron & Mindy & Family
The Cannons are doing well....
Jakob turns 7 this month. He had a great pool party but he seems to have an affinity for the ocean. He took his first surf lesson this month and was standing on his board by the end of it. Pretty soon he will be joining me on Friday Mornings! I had the opportunity (and by opportunity I mean I was volunteered) to speak at the state wide California Young Single Adult Conference in the Priesthood Session. There were roughly 6-700 priesthood holders in the audience, but I didn't see anyone appropriate for Cassie. Then again, I wasn't looking too closely as I was moderately anxious.
My first book is completed and in the hands of my co-author. If he ever decides to do anything with it is up to him. I am well into my second book and am much more excited about this one. Let’s hope it works out well because going to prison every day sucks.
I played in the 12 annual Tournament of the Golden Pony this month with Mindy's brother and came off conquerer!
Mindy is excited and a little apprehensive about sending Jake back to school for the first grade. She can't wait, however, to get Hannah into pre-school.
All is well here as we await the end of summer (which really only means we get our beaches back!)

September 2009 - Cannon, Adam & Erica & Family
Hello.
We are going to be moving into our new home on September 14th. Maja has started school. She is in the second grade and loves it. This is the 5th school she has attended in her short 3 year school career. We are done moving. Ever. It is a good thing everybody falls in love with her as soon as they meet her, otherwise all of the moves would have been really hard on her. I am going to have to do something about her likeability when she gets older, but for now, it has served her well. Annika and Ava continue to destroy Mom and Mels home. We found out we will be having another girl. That makes 4. I don't know what to say about that, except we are done. That is all we have to report.

Hello Everyone,
This month has been eventful as I turned 29 and went on a cruise to Cabo San Lucas (and celebrated my birthday there). This is what I did for 4 days: Ate, slept, napped (yes, they are different things!), got some sun, read 3 books and exercised. My life is rough! Still working at the looney bin full time and I should be done with data collection in December. Other than that, it's been the same routine. Fortunately it's a routine I like! Until next month!

September 2009 - Haupt, Levi & Torrie & Family
August was a fun month. The weather has been adventurous with some of the wildest thunderstorms I’ve ever seen. We didn’t need to prepare for school because we’re all grown up and our kiddies are too little. I will admit we had a lot of fun being in school and I miss it now that its gone. We had an adventurous trip to the Boston temple. We also got some good news. Levi has an opportunity to go to the manufacturing lab in Lynchburg, VA to learn and keep tabs for the design lab (up here in NY) for the next two years, so its back into the boxes, we’re moving! We also celebrated 5 years of marriage as our anniversary is in the COOLEST month! Charlotte is crawling at full speed and is getting gutsier when it comes to stepping away from the furniture, hopefully she'll have a face left for pictures of her birthday this next month. We’ll have a full-blown walker on our hands soon. Emma is trying her best to be a good listener and is a sweet sister and a constant source of entertainment. We hope you all had a great month.

September 2009 - McClintock, Robert & Susan
Dear Family,
August is traditionally the hottest time of the year in Sacramento. It makes the tomatoes scrumptious, the melons juicy, the pears lip-smacking good and signals the beginning of the State Fair, school, and the return of freeway traffic jams. However, this August has been mostly mild which means tomato duty at the church cannery might be short-lived and State Fair riots reduced. It’s hard to choose which is one’s favorite among two such difficult choices.
The McClintocks have been in good health and happy spirits. Grandma Anna is getting closer to ninety. Uncle Bob is soon to be on the road with the Sacramento City Panthers as their football season begins and he runs the sidelines with his 50 pounds of camera gear recording the games. Teaching in Sunday School for Susan continues to gratify, challenge, and strengthen her testimony.
We hope all are thriving and stocking up on their food storage.

Unfortunately there is nothing new going on, over here on the "Westside." We are in a constant state of waiting. Therefore, to hopefully break this state, I decided to go back to work. So I will wait to see the benefits of this choice as well. The only new thing that is going on, is that our stake is so desperate for leadership that they called me to be the Stake YW President. I hope I don't screw up too many girls in the process. Anyway, hope all is well.

September 2009 - Slade, Jeff & Crystal & Family
The Slades of Windsor "salute" you all. In Italian, we use the verb "salutare" a lot, but mostly to say hi to someone. If it is one person, you can say "Ti saluto", or "Vi saluto" for several people. Italian is a great language, but I find myself using Spanish every day at Walmart. I went back to Walmart after trying financial services for over a year. That didn't work out, and it is really nice to have a consistent paycheck while doing something I enjoy. It is still demanding, but I find myself thinking often that it is nice to have a job.
With Mathew, Felicity, and Andrew in two different schools and Crystal and I working two full-time jobs, we are finding less time together as a family. We've enjoyed a relatively calm and relaxing summer, however. We biked around, swam some, and got together with some extended family, so memories were made. Now, the kids are doing well in school and getting back to the routine.
Crystal is glad to work in the local school district so she can come home for lunch. Her health is improving somewhat so we are glad for that. We sure hope that trend continues. Hope all is well with y'all. Ciao!

September 2009 - Westover, Mel & Carol
Well family, we are still alive and living in Fresno. Adam and Erica and the girls have been living with us this summer while their house is being built. Their move-in date is September 14, Adam and Kimber's birthday. School has started again for this year. We are still in the honeymoon period. I have been administering tests to see where each child is. I have a lot of students who are younger brothers and sisters of former students. It is nice to see these students grow up.
Mel and I spent most of the summer working our ACN business. We went to Charlotte N.C. in June, and the next international event is in September 11, in Detroit. We have been driving to Pismo Beach, San Diego, Portland, Oregon, Carson City, and all over Fresno nightly as our business is growing. Mel is taking less and less building jobs, and hopefully he can be done altogether soon. Fresno is hot, but I know that the cooling is just around the corner, CAN'T WAIT!

September 2009 - Wilcox, Todd & Tracy & Family
The Wilcox family are doing well. The kids finally started school so I am doing great too. Todd and I celebrated our 9th anniversary on the 25th. I am so grateful to have such a sweet husband.
My dad has been staying with us since his divorce. I am so glad we have been able to do this for him. He hopes to be in his new house in Provo by September. I am sure though he will be sad to leave my noisy house for a quiet one. :)
I have a new temple now. The Oquirreh Mountain temple was just dedicated. It was a great service that brought the cry baby out of me (not hard to do). We love and miss you all.

September 2009 - Woodward, Kevin & Tammy & Family
Early in the month of August, Tammy and I went out to Palmdale for the funeral of Tammy’s 34-year old step-sister Nicole. Her passing was unexpected. It was a good time to see Tammy’s mother Mable, step-father Richard and family members who live in Palmdale. We came home and were soon greeted by Arianna, Alexis and Maja who flew in from Provo.
We certainly enjoyed the week with Alexis and Maja visiting. We spent one day visiting Royal Gorge (about 80 miles southwest of Colorado Springs). The suspension bridge that spans the canyon is very impressive. It hovers 1050 feet over the Arkansas River below. The cell phone reception from the middle of the bridge was very good. I tested it by calling Dad to tell him about this remarkable civil engineering feat upon which I was standing.
Sundays have been busy this past month. Early in the month, I had the chance to address the freshman cadets at the Academy who are church members. I had the privilege of speaking to our Young Single Adults on two occasions, once during their weekend YSA conference, and again at a local CES fireside. Later I enjoyed speaking to the youth of our stake during our annual Standards Night. With ward conferences behind us, and stake conference ahead of us, it’s a pretty even pace throughout the year.
We received word that the presiding General Authority at our upcoming stake conference will be Elder Richard J. Maynes of the Seventy. We have also arranged to have President Uchtdorf come to the Academy on January 22, 2010 to speak to the cadets there. As a stake presidency, we have been working with the command at the Academy, to get to know them and to ask if they would extend this invitation to President Uchtdorf. They were very pleased to do so, and are planning on being in attendance when he comes.
