Dear family,
It was gratifying to see from the May Newswire that Dr. Crankshaft has not mellowed between his infrequent reports. But as he said, every family needs one of every kind..
This picture shows Zachari and Joshua as they complete 7th grade. I’m the short one in the middle. They are getting so tall that if they were black they could eventually play for the Lakers.
It’s not that they are growing taller as much as I’m shrinking. During the month of April and most of May I was recovering from an illness. The doctor said I was at death’s door and he thought he could pull me through, but I went for a 2nd opinion.
Recently the school held its annual open house, an event not unlike an ant hill. Each teacher, if you got close enough to talk to, would give you a glowing report on the performance of your student, very little of which is reflected in the written report card that follows. But the evening was not a total bust, the cookies were good.
Our school district is not holding summer school this year. It has something to do with deficiency of funds, and California’s need to bolster the salaries of the state prison psychiatrists.
Several weeks ago I sought advice from the manager of the local Church Employment Office, a close friend of Corene, about acquiring some house cleaning help. She recommended her own daughter, who has such a business of her own. After her first cleaning session Zack said, “I think I can adjust to her.” It is working out very well and allows me more time to forage for food to keep two continually hungry guests fed.
I’d brag about my tomato crop, but I’d have to stretch the truth, which has never been my nature. But it is fair to say that with the cold and wet spring we’ve had, one would think we were living In Colorado Springs east of I-5.
My old friend Winston Langlois (96) died recently at an assisted care facility in Bountiful, Utah where he and Alice moved about 8 weeks earlier from Sacramento. A funeral was held for him in our stake center, where I was privileged to help give him a proper send off.
After all the abuse I get from Aaron it is refreshing to have a grandson who sees me in a more favorable light. When assigned in school to write about the person he admires the most, Joshua wrote:
“The person I admire the most is my grandfather. He is tall about 5’ 7”. He is old like 86. He has grey hair. His actions are he sleep a lot., He walks and sometimes limps a little. He has a positive attitude. He says: “Hi Buddy,.” and is a gentleman. I’m glad I picked my grandfather and he’s cool.”
Now that’s showing the proper respect to your elders, and he who is lacking in that area should shape up.

Dear Family,
Lots is happening here but nothing hugely noteworthy. Craig and I finished the Accounting class which means that he will be graduating after 2 more classes. He and I are especially thanjful that the 30+hours a week, not counting time in class is over. I'm busy teaching 3 sections of classes this Spring at BYU and am scheduled for only 1 for Summer. That could change with adding another one, but I hope not.
Rick turns 61 today and doesn't want me to remind him. HA! He will be facing the music tonight when he gets home. We are waiting (and waiting) for the spring to finally come to Utah. It rains, and we have one day, and then it is back to rain again. When we were in Seattle last week, that seemed to be the same for them. However, I am not looking forward to 90 degree heat in the summer, either. I guess I am just too picky. It comes with old age.
That's about it for now. When you're in town give us a call.

June 2010 - Haupt, Levi & Torrie & family
Well May has been HUMID, did you hear me?!? Holy moly, 90 degrees and raining is CRAZY, luckily our landlord has taken pity and opened the pool a couple of weeks early. Poor Charlotte is our “tomato baby” being out in the heat and humidity makes her flush, luckily she has the “Woodward” skin that tans instead of burns. My children are part fish and would live in the pool if I let them. Both are doing so good learning to float on their tummies. Charlotte loves to press her fingers over the fountains (or sit on them) and spray us.
The thunderstorms are still awesome, I love east coast rain!

Hi Family,
McClintocks are still drawing air and taking up space...as we used to say in the Sixties. And -- we are finally well.
Emily and Justin visited us for a weekend this month and we had a very sweet time with them and Rocco. Beware! Justin and Emily have added more extensions to their game, Dominion, and are determined players. If invited to play with them, think twice.
Uncle Bob has been working with the C.K. McClatchy High School Reunion Committee. He was invited to take the commission by his good friend Bevan Richardson, Uncle Gary's cousin. Uncle Bob built the website for the Reunion committee and has spent hundreds of hours scanning, cropping, and optimizing Senior pictures from their 1960 year book and then posting them to the Reunion website along with many other facets of the website. It looks wonderful and the committee are quite pleased.
A bit of trivia for you. C.K. McClatchy was the son of James McClatchy the founding editor of the Sacramento Bee, est. 1857. The McClatchy company also publish the Modesto Bee and the Fresno Bee. By 2008 the McClatchy company was the third largest newspaper publisher in the United States with 30 daily newspapers in 15 states and 150 non-newspaper publications. The McClatchy's also owned television and radio stations. The mascot for all of the McClatchy enterprises is a bee which was commissioned from Walt Disney studios and drawn by Disney artist Hank Porter. The newspaper bee's name is Scoopy. The AM radio bee was Gaby. The FM radio bee was Flutey. And the Televison bee was Teevy. (Just the stuff water cooler conversations are made of.)
Why would any of you be amazed that Aunt Susan would know this minutiae! Doesn't everybody?

June 2010 - Slade, Jeff & Crystal & family
Summer is here and we are ready to play! I am so excited to have a break from being a school psychologist and I get to be a mom for the whole summer!!!
June is busy for us, Mathew turns 12, I turn 37 and we are desperately trying to finish up Mathews room in the basement. He has been soooooo patient. His dad has been building it for 3 years, you read that right. 3 years. Finally I said if it wasn't done this summer I was hiring someone to do it and that got the ball rolling. Mathew has amazed me this year at school, he has won poetry contests, knowledge bowl, art contests, spelling bees, I keep thinking he must have been switched at birth......but that delivery was way too memorable.
Felicity is our little rock star. Constantly singing and has little fear of being on stage, she must be a Slade. She actually sounds pretty good too!
And Andrew, sweet Andrew, he is our peacemaker and the little love of my life. The kids explained to me with great detail how VERY BORING our life would be without Andrew.
Life is good, we are happy.

June 2010 - Wilcox, Todd & Tracy & family
The Wilcox family is doing well. We had a fun time visiting Kimber and going to Disneyland. We are preparing this month for Alexis' 8th birthday. She is excited to get baptized! She recently got her ears pierced, which I am proud to say that she didn't cry! It is a wonder how she didn't because she is known for crying EVERYDAY over something! She is very sensitive! Case in point, we were watching the nature documentary "Life" and she started bawling when a baby seal was eaten by an Orca. She is still upset over it and will probably hate Killer whales for the rest of her life! Brenton just thought it was cool, typical boy. We also found out in the month of May that due to budget cuts in our school district our school is changing from year around to traditional. This is going to make April trips to California more tricky. Oh well!

June 2010 - Woodward, Kevin & Tammy & family
This past month, Tammy and I took the opportunity to travel to Atlanta for a week. I had business in the area. We took in the sights during the after-hours. We both enjoyed the city's huge aquarium and took a tour of the downtown area on segways (i.e. a self-balancing personal transportation device with two wheels; can operate in any level pedestrian environment). We each had our own. Tammy has decided that she wants to own one....badly. We spent a couple of days and a night in Savannah (ate lunch at Paula Deen's place of Food Network fame), and in Hilton Head, SC. That is one large island that seems to go on forever. The Atlantic Ocean is that area is warm, but no waves of which to speak. Aaron and Adam would be wise to leave their surfboards at home should they ever venture out that way. Later in the month I had another business trip to Bethesda, MD (just outside of Washington, D.C.).
The end of the month brings the Air Force Academy graduation with all its celebration. We once again enjoyed the annual 3-day airshow of the Air Force Thunderbirds from our back deck.

You won't find these in the Church News. You'll find him quite at ease with aircraft and simulators. I thought the family would enjoy them.

May 2010 - Cannon, Aaron & Mindy & Family
Hello all...
Baseball season is in full swing in the Cannon home. Southern California is CRAZY for baseball and we are stuck right in the middle. We have practice 2-3 times a week as well as 2 games a week until the middle of June I believe and then it's the playoffs. We have been going strong since March. While this doesn't SOUND like that big of a deal....these kids are 6 and 7. Gone are the days when everyone wears number one, everyone hits, everyone scores, everyone is a winner. Hello winners and losers! Those of you with access to Facebook will have followed several of Jakobs exploits this season already so I wont bore you with a recap. Hannah gets even more excited than Jakob for "Jakob plays baseball!". She has his Jersey from last year, his hat from like 3 years ago, and a pink mitt that she wears while he is playing. Good times.
Work for me is the same. Teaching, practicing, treating, writing, presenting, blah blah blah. Last week I personally had the experience of witnessing three inmates get slashed. Remember though, they are all just poor misunderstood souls. They are very grateful to each and every one of you for paying their medical bills for the rest of their lives while they continue to go about robbing, stealing, kililng, etc.
We are looking forward to getting our furloughs back and getting that extra 14% that Arnold has been stealing from us.
I was recently examining the landscape of the NBA playoffs and I couldn't find the Sacramento Kings anywhere? What happened? Are they terrible again? There is always room on the Laker Bandwagon for those of you that wanna hop on. Remember, I'm driving it!
Mindy is starting a baking company where she makes sugar cookies and cupcakes with beautiful designs on them. She was asked to donate for the school auction and slowly her name is getting out there. She's very exited (and nervous).
As I read the different submissions from month to month I feel that our newsletter is really missing an element that I find in most other family newsletters. It took me a while to put my finger on it as we have so many elements that seem to be consistent across families. Things like a....a cantankerous patriarch....check! Sibling rivalries....check! etc. etc. But that one piece.....what is it.....oh that's right! I remember!

May 2010 - Cannon, Cassie
It's true! It's true! I am now Cassandra Cannon, Ph.D. The defense was on 4/23/10 from 1-3PM . . .and was definitely 2 hours long. I didn't realize how exhausting it would be. Since family (you know, the most important people!) weren't allowed into the defense, mom and Mel stood outside and listened. When my dissertation chair called me back in the room and said, "Congratulations, Dr. Cannon" and gave me a hug, my first thought was, "Oh good. Now I need a nap." I'm still not used to being called Dr. Cannon, but I'm working on it! I graduate May 28, hopefully we will have some good pictures for the June newswire. I hope everyone is doing well!

May 2010 - Ekins, Justin & Emily
Justin and I have had a fun month. I've also attached some pictures since January since we've forgotten to post a few months.
First, we had a great time skiing back when we were in Utah. I'm getting a lot better at skiing, not that I want to go on the black runs, but I really like the blue runs now! I also discovered that I finally am skiing fast enough that I need goggles! I just used sunglasses and for the rest of the week my skin was all rough around my eyes.
We've really gotten in Bocce ball, so the picture were Justin looks like he's yelling...those are Bocce balls. It's Italian bowling, but you can do it in the park. If you are curious what he's shouting, he's shouting "I Have Dominion!!" because we recently discovered the best card game ever called Dominion. We make just about all of our friends play it with us, and one of his friends said that when you win you should shout that you have dominion! So, Justin thought that the new rule should also be applied to Bocce ball.
We went up with some friends to the Ronald Reagan ranch. The picture with us in front of a wall might actually be us in front of an actual piece of the Berlin Wall, but I'm not sure. Either way, it represents the Berlin Wall, which was spray painted all over. A retired Air Force one is kept at the Reagan Ranch, and we got to go in side.
Rocco, our adorable cat, is continuing being his adorable self. This picture is of me sleeping in the morning. Justin took the picture with his blackberry when he woke up and found Rocco sleeping with his arm around me. He woke up as Justin took the picture, but it still is so cute.
This other picture is of us with some friends at dinner. Just said some ridiculous thing, I responded, and then he tried to justify whatever he said. Joanna got this great picture of us, and I felt like it capture our typical friendly banter.
So, for some updates. I just found out that I passed my second field paper for my PhD program! This means that I have finished the equivalent to comprehensive exams. I now will start writing my dissertation prospectus. Then I defend my dissertation prospectus and then start writing the dissertation. I got an internship this summer in Washington DC at the Cato Institute, so I'll be heading to DC for a few months. Fortunately, Torrie and Levi will get to spend lots of quality time with me this summer :) Justin will start applying to business schools this fall. He's applying all over the country, so I have no idea where we might go for business school.
I had lunch with Kimber a few weekends ago, and she told me she was just called to be the Stake's Young Women's President. So I'm sure she'll have lots of fun stories to share about that.

April is a fun and festive month in our house. It began with a trip down to Asheville, NC. Torrie’s cousin Randi and her family recently relocated there. And since they are the closest family we invited ourselves over for General Conference/ Easter weekend. (Aren’t you glad none of you live closer so you won’t have us inviting ourselves over l :) We had lots of fun complete with incredible food and an Easter egg hunt for all the kiddos.
We thought General Conference was great even over the squeals of the cousins. One of my favorite quotes was about mothers. “The love of a true mother comes nearer to being like the love of God than any other kind of love” Pres. Joseph F. Smith, which I think is applicable considering Mother’s day being so close.
The next few weeks were spent planning a splendid Dragon themed birthday party for Emma who turned 4 on April 26th. She spent the morning at joy school where Torrie treated the class to strawberry frosted chocolate cupcakes. Emma ended the day in a Grandpa Word/ Uncle Kevin fashion by getting so excited and overwhelmed she threw up the cupcake and lived out the day on the couch. We had the party on Fri April 30th and it was cute but the weather got unexpectedly hot, and it was cut a bit short. Emma was still excited for her presents and her dragon cake.
We’re very excited for May, hopefully the nice weather will continue and bring the opening of our pool for Memorial day weekend. We love you all and hope that you enjoyed yourselves.

May 2010 - McClintock, Robert & Susan
Hi Family,
We have spent most of April being sick. We had a very nice member of our ward come by to offer to mow our lawn because he knew we had been sick. We have decided that with all the rain and sporadic sunshine spring allergies have been particularly aggressive. Our sinuses, having been in overdrive, just couldn't handle the pollen assaults and gave in. Uncle Bob has spent almost three weeks with pneumonia.
Beyond that life is good. Uncle Bob and Aunt Susan were invited to write music for their ward Roadshow, which they did. The stake Roadshows were performed the last Saturday of April. Out of curiosity we attended the performance and had a jolly time seeing how our ward youth did. It was fun to see how really awful are most Roadshows and what great fun youth can have being silly and absurd. Nevertheless, it is such a wonderful experience when you are youth participating in a ward Roadshow. Those memories last a lifetime.
Aunt Susan has joined the ward "Garden Club" and has started a joint garden with other ward members. After spending time preparing the soil and then crawling around planting seed and seedlings she has concluded that she is past her prime when it comes to field work.
